Journey South to Caribbean

We had an exciting trip down from Newport, RI to Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten.

Read about our FORTUNATE false start here.

Of the 21 boats that left Newport as part of the rally, 2 were abandoned at sea with the crews rescued by freighters, and only 13 made it to Bermuda. The rest diverted for repairs or changed their courses.

A very sweet woman, Jan, (aboard the only boat smaller than ours) was swept into the raging sea after 12 days of battling storms on a trip that should’ve only taken 5 days. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars and my husband that we were forced back to Port Washington.

Here are my passage notes from our actual journey. It was a lot smoother. We spent 12 days travelling from Hampton, VA to Simpson Bay, arriving safely on November 23, 2011.
